‘Pride is a riot’: Elevating queer voices and stories in June

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ rights and spirit. Many events are happening in and around Boston, including the “Rainbow Riot” comedy show on Saturday, June 15th, at the Deep Thoughts record store in Jamaica Plain.

Organizer Shelby LeCuyer said the goal of the comedy and music show is to elevate queer stories and voices. Comedian Evan Valentine joined LeCuyer to talk more about the show on Boston Globe Today with host Segun Oduolowu. Watch the segment at the top of the story.

“I feel like the world is on fire right now and being able to bring joy to folks amidst all of the mayhem is amazing,” said Valentine. His goal as a comedian is to make his act accessible to diverse audiences.

The show’s name, “Rainbow Riot,” stems from Pride Month’s origin story.

“The first pride was a riot,” said LeCuyer. “Queer folks were fighting for their freedoms, rights and liberties. It is pure queer fashion for us to be challenging the norm, to be making folks laugh and to be introducing topics that make people think and learn and maybe pee their pants a little bit.”

Boston Globe Today airs Monday through Thursday at 5 p.m. on NESN and is available to stream on-demand at globe.com/bgt.
